Sophomore quarterback Paul Mroz threw three touchdown passes as Victor Valley College blew out Los Angeles Southwest College 41-17 at Silverado High on Saturday night to improve to 3-0.

VVC led 41-3 early in the fourth quarter before the Cougars scored two late touchdowns. Coming into Saturday’s game, the Cougars (1-2) had given up a total of 11 points in two games.

“Both sides of the ball played well,” Victor Valley College head coach Dave Hoover said. “I think we were able to play every single athlete on roster. The kids played really well. We played a team that had given up 11 points in two games. Honestly, I think we left some points on the field.”

Mroz threw TD passes of 10, 24 and 88 yards. Devonte Milligan, Jamal Tate and Jayveon Taylor each snagged a TD pass.

Jason Knowles punched in a 1-yard touchdown run following a turnover, and Dominique Williams returned an interception for a score. Knowles’ brother Jay Knowles intercepted a pass, and VVC’s defense forced a fumble at the goal line.

“We knew we were a stronger program than LA Southwest, (but) we showed a little maturity to be able to concentrate on what we’re doing regardless of who we’re playing,” Hoover said. “I thought we played a nice football game.”

Saturday marked the first time VVC played a home game in Silverado’s stadium.

“A lot of people did a lot of things to make it happen,” Hoover said.

The Rams open American Mountain Conference play on Sept. 27 at Southwestern College with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m. Last season VVC lost to the Jaguars — who finished second in the conference — by one point.

“Southwestern’s a very strong football program,” Hoover said. “We believe we can line up and play with them any day of the week. I’m very excited for the game.”
